Common snag list and punch list terms explained
You do not need technical jargon to be taken seriously. These terms are here to help you communicate clearly.
Snag list / Punch list
Two names for the same thing: a list of defects or unfinished items found during handover or renovation checks.
Handover
The stage when the property is transferred and final issues are reviewed.
Remedial works
The corrective work done to fix listed issues.
Within tolerance
A common reason for rejecting an item. It means the contractor says the finish is within acceptable limits. Ask what standard they are using if unclear.
Practical completion
Often means the property is substantially complete and can be handed over, while minor defects may remain to be fixed.
Defect liability period
A period after completion during which identified defects may still be corrected under contract terms.
How to keep language simple
- Describe what you can see, not what you think caused it
- Use room + location + issue format
- Attach clear photos
